If shingles are cracked missing or rotten replacing them may be another simple fix for repairing a leaky roof provided you have the replacement shingles.

It may only rain hard enough once or twice a year to actually cause a leak and sticking a bucket underneath the leak is obviously the easiest fix some of the more basic roof repairs can easily be done on your own provided you re familiar and comfortable with some diy tasks and a bit of elbow grease.
Assessing a roof leak.
Look above the ceiling leak point and scan the sheathing leading towards the peak of the roof.
Start low soaking the area just above where the leak appears in the house.

Replace any missing or rotted siding above the step flashing on dormers.

Recaulk the corner flashing if any areas have hardened caulk.
